Growing Gardens
School gardens are sites for learning in nature: dynamic and creative spaces in which people cultivate, observe, sustain and harvest living things.
They are places within the school landscape where teachers, learners, parents, and community members work together, shaping and responding to natural systems as they develop their understanding of sustainable food production and environmental issues.
Growing Communities have established a number of school gardens throughout South-East Queensland. We utilise a team of environmental educators and permaculturalists to assist in developing a design and management plan which acknowledges a school’s existing strengths and constraints.
Growing Communities’ work is based around permaculture - encouraging the development of sustainable agricultural practices in urban areas to promote the cultural richness of food, plants and people. Permaculture is a system design tool that works with nature. It looks at the whole ecosystem, observing and emulating the dynamic interactions of elements to create a cultivated ecology. The website, Permaculture Principles, has comprehensive information on the Holmgren and Mollison permaculture model practiced throughout Australia.
